Unknown Frontier

TECHNE is proud to present Unknown Frontier, a group show curated by Chuck Thomas featuring artists Jeff Feld, Sylvia Fernandez, Nathanael Flink, Jen Hitchings, Will Hutnick, Hwang (Bo) Kim, David Kramer, Jason Clay Lewis, Christopher Lin, Briana Miyoko, Tim Murdoch, Jonathan Schipper, Kate Stone, Delilah Strukel, and Frank Webster.
Unknown Frontier features artists that are exploring uniquely unexpected techniques and materials beyond the norm. The work in the show is interactive, playful, and exploding with color. Walking around the gallery you may just find your perfect vacation vista, a dramatic inverted installation, surreal landscapes, intimate ethereal sculptures or an unexpected surprise that catches the viewer off guard.
Whether it's exploring the wild frontier or the exploration of the cosmos, going into the unknown can be both frightening and exhilarating. Just as the horizon perpetually retreats as you draw nearer, we often find our goals just beyond our reach.
The Contemporary Art World is limitless, adaptable, and perpetually expanding. We are all looking for the next breakthrough or mind shattering revelation, but can find ourselves locked in a system and thinking small. Breaking the cycle can feel rather daunting and seemingly impossible.
In the age of the Wild West, we reflect on history and admire the legendary figures of yesteryear. Much like specific eras in art history, we are captivated by the significant turning points in art that have propelled the Art World forward and enhanced our comprehension of what can be achieved.
Similar to the Gold Rush, artists from across the globe strive with the aspiration of staking a name for themselves. Like the railroad bringing civilization to the Plains, we could never have imagined how the internet and social media could broaden the scope and intensity of artistic engagement.
We once believed that the Earth was encased within a spherical shell where the inner surface was embellished with stars. To venture past this limit would essentially signify breaking free from the constraints that encompassed our entire existence. You would find yourself literally outside the universe, presumably in the presence of the divine.
As we journey beyond our own galaxy the distances become limitless to infinite. Is there a definitive edge or is there simply nothingness forever. When we look beyond our closest neighbors, stars are positioned at increasingly greater distances. This cycle continues until time and space become unfathomable. Thus, every artist asks the question where will my explorations take me and what is left unexplored.
TECHNE is an artist-run gallery in Oceanside, San Diego that amplifies the voices of committed artists working in diverse media from around the world. With one of the most impressive exhibition spaces in North County, TECHNE has quickly become one of most dynamic art destinations in the greater San Diego area.
